Antequera

Antequera

Antequera, a city full of life. A vibrant destination where you can find monuments, activities, art, culture, museums and wonderful people.

The Torcal of Antequera:
If you are sightseeing in Antequera you can not miss one of the most wonderful enclaves of Andalusia, El Torcal de Antequera .
Declared a World Heritage Site in 2016 by UNESCO, this karst landscape is the most important in Europe.

The Dolmens of Antequera
In 2016 the UNESCO declared World Heritage Site the set formed by "El Torcal de Antequera, La Peña de Los Enamorados and Los Dólmenes de Antequera" . This is one of the tourist resources of Antequera that you can not miss, for its uniqueness and magic. It consists of two different enclaves or spaces. In one of them at the entrance of Antequera from Malaga is the Dolmen or Tholos del Romeral and already entering the city of Antequera we find the site of the Dolmens of Menga and Viera. Besides being a very comfortable and fully accessible visit because you can access directly by car to the parking that is enabled in both spaces.

Alcazaba of Antequera and Collegiate Church of Santa María
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor was built in the sixteenth century and is one of the first Renaissance buildings to be carried out in Spain, in fact the facade still has Gothic details.  The interior is made up of three spaces separated by Ionic columns and Mudejar style wooden roofs. A work that transports us to past centuries where we will enjoy its majesty as soon as we enter through the Arch of the Giants, an element of great importance in the city of Antequera because in the words of its former mayor and historian Jesús Romero: "The Arch, which opens in a wall of more than two meters thick, has a height of seven meters. Its crowning was until the nineteenth century quite showy since it had a large niche flanked by two aletones, in which there was a huge Roman statue of Hercules. The jar of lilies on the keystone, as well as the castle and the lion on the cornice, form the coat of arms of the city".

In the square of the collegiate church there is a sculpture of the Antequera poet Pedro Espinosa made by Manuel Patricio Toro.

From this same square, the Plaza de los Escribanos, we can see the Roman Baths under Santa Maria and a beautiful view of La Iglesia del Carmen.

As a singularity, we will tell you that our Collegiate Church of Santa Maria was one of the main scenes of the filming of the Netflix series "Warrior Nun".
