Some of the subtropical fruits that can be grown in the Malaga area include:
Avocado: Avocado cultivation has gained popularity in Malaga in recent years. The mild climate and mild temperatures throughout the year are ideal for avocado growth. Varieties such as Hass, Fuerte and Bacon are well adapted to this region.
Mango: Mango can also be grown successfully in Malaga. It requires a warm climate and frost protection, so areas near the coast are best suited. Some popular mango varieties include Osteen, Kent and Keitt.
Custard apple: Custard apple is another subtropical fruit grown in Malaga. This sweet-tasting, creamy-fleshed fruit is prized for its exquisite flavor. Varieties grown in the region include Fino de Jete, Campas and Llanos de Torrox.
Papaya: Although less common, papaya can also be grown in Malaga. It requires warm temperatures and well-drained soil. It is important to protect it from low temperatures and frost, so greenhouse cultivation may be an option.
Visit to the Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture "La Mayora".
The Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture "La Mayora" was created to join the efforts of the groups of the pre-existing Experimental Station "La Mayora" of the Spanish National Research Council (EELM-CSIC) and groups from several departments of the University of Malaga (UMA) to enhance and coordinate more efficiently the scientific research in intensive horticulture and subtropical fruit growing that was being developed in the two entities.
The lines of work carried out by the institute range from molecular aspects of plants and their pathogens to crop management. Its research is focused on the search for an integrated and sustainable cultivation, in which an optimal use of resources is achieved, with a lower environmental impact and without leaving behind the commitment to quality and organoleptic characteristics of the fruit.
